SEPTEMBER MEETING  Monday September 28, 2009 6:30 PM

Cumberland Presbyterian Church - SE corner of Moon and Academy - Adult Ed Rm 407

Bedsides revealing the results of our “Out of the Box” challenge, Kim Blueher and Clare Zurawski from WESST will be presenting information on how to start a small business. Several members have taken advantage of WESST’s seminars and classes and rave about the basic of business planning and information WESST has provided to them.

WESST (The Women's Economic Self-Sufficiency Team) is a statewide economic development organization committed to growing New Mexico's economy by cultivating entrepreneurship. Incorporated in 1988 as a 501(c)3 non-profit, WESST places particular emphasis on helping low-income women and minorities achieve financial self-sufficiency through sustained self-employment. While our historical target market is low-income, unemployed and/or underemployed women and minorities, WESST's services are available to any New Mexico resident seeking to start or grow a business.

Kim Blueher

Kim received her MBA in Finance from the UNM Anderson School of Management in 1982 and spent the next 8 years in banking as a commercial loan officer in Arizona and New Mexico. When WESST was started in 1990, she joined to set up the micro-loan program, which she currently manages. She also teaches some of the training classes in Albuquerque on business planning and financial projections.

Clare Zurawski

Clare joined WESST in 1997 while completing her MBA at the University of New Mexico. She spent six years supporting rural entrepreneurs in the Taos office, many of them artisan businesses, and returned to Albuquerque in 2004 as Regional Manager. In 2006, she received the "40 Under Forty" award from New Mexico Business Weekly, and currently directs WESST’s "ezSEO" internet marketing program statewide.

AUGUST MEETING  Monday 24 August 2009 6:30 P.M.

Cumberland Presbyterian Church - SE corner of Moon and Academy - Adult Ed Rm 407

Back by popular demand is our own Elaine Weisman talking about Pearls. Elaine shared her knowledge and care of pearls several years ago and members have begged to have a refresher. Elaine gave the scientific and technical information we all need to effectively purchase and use pearls in our jewelry. Don’t miss it; we may not be able to talk her into presenting Pearls again for another couple of years

At the August Meeting we will be having a Show and Tell Table so if you are working on something you'd like to share, bring it and be ready to tell all the other members about it. Jill Bartell also wants to remind you that you should be about half way done with your September Shrine Challenge by now too. Your board has been has been looking into special events and field trips for the members and will be announcing an event we've organized for you on September 12th. Hint- it involves an afternoon of shopping in 2 private studios.

STATE FAIR UPDATE

The board and members have also been working on getting ready to sponsor the creative arts jewelry entries at the State Fair. We desperately need volunteers to help take in entries on the following dates and times in the Creative Arts Building at Expo New Mexico as well as help return the entries to their owners after the fair ends. Several members have already volunteered for a full days work. Won't you help make this a great event for Beaders in the Community? We would love to see some new faces helping out this time.

JUNE MEETING  Monday  22 June 2009 6:30 P.M.

Beaded Iris (class room annex at the north east corner of the shopping center-look for our sign).

Jill Bartell will be bringing the challenge beads for the challenge she introduced at our last meeting. Bring $5.00 for a kit and be be prepared to "think out side the box" as Jill would say between now and September. Rio Grande is presenting a program on the new Bronze Clay and their presentations are always interesting and informative.

While the Beaded Iris does have some chairs, it is a good idea to pop a chair or two into your trunk to assure you have a comfortable seat for the meeting.

MAY 2009 MEETING

Monday, May 18th, 6:30 pm at MAMA'S MINERALS

Laura Randolph, owner and president of Mama's Minerals, started selling crystal gemstones and geodes at arts & crafts fairs around the Southwest in 1985. Since then Mama's has vastly expanded its products into such areas as lapidary supplies and rock tumbling equipment. Mama’s provides classes for all ages in rocks and minerals, jewelry-making, beading, and has made the store available for school and club field trips that enchant students and teachers alike. She now holds birthday parties and has created a vibrant mail order and online business to better serve you. She will discuss geodes, minerals, and how the “business of selling rocks and beads” works. BRING A CHAIR and be prepared to have fun.

Bring your July Workshop checks if you have not already sent them in.

FIBER ARTS FIESTA
SEVENTH BIENNIAL JURIED SHOW & FIBER ARTS EXHIBIT May 21- 23, 2009

The Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta 2009 is the seventh biennial show dedicated to fiber arts education and to the display of fiber-related artwork. Hosted by the Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council, Inc. (AFAC), a tax-exempt, non-profit organization, the Fiesta includes both juried and judged works organized by 16 co-sponsoring New Mexico fiber arts guilds. Over 500 juried and judged exhibits will be displayed in this show.

There are two major changes from the last Fiesta. First, the Fiesta is moving to bigger and better quarters in the Manuel Lujan Building, still on the Expo New Mexico Fairgrounds! Second, an assortment of classes has been scheduled to take place on-site in a classroom-dedicated space. We are very excited to add classes to our venue as Fiesta attendees have been asking for them for years and we believe that the classes will be a valuable addition to the Fiesta experience! Class titles & teachers, costs, kit fees and registration information will be posted on this website when the details are available. See the feature PROFILE article. Judy Walker is being sponsored by the New Mexico Bead Society   For more info, go to www.fiberartsfiesta.com

FEBRUARY 2009 MEETING

Forthcoming

JANUARY 2009 MEETING

The January meeting is the annual business meeting to decide what programs we want during the year.

We now have a new e-mail account.  To get started, if you would be so kind, please add this e-mail address to your e-mail "Contact" list and use it from this point forward to reach your board members. Doing so will help us stay organized!  - beadsocietynm@gmail.com

A member asked a question about having an e-mail community among our members - a system that would allow you to post messages to the group and allow you to learn from each other and build new friendships. If you are interested in this type of e-mail community, please let me know and I'll set up a Yahoo! Newsgroup. Membership into that group will be voluntary (you'll have to contact us to be added to the group). Handling the sign-ups in this manner (vs. automatically adding everyone) is a precaution that will prevent uninterested parties from receiving BSNM community mail. If I receive enough interest in this arrangement, I'll set it up in the next week or so and will forward details to you...so please let me know

Like all spring-cleaning decisions, some things are too good to discard and others just need to be pitched. If you’ve come to your senses since purchasing some beads that really won’t work in any of your projects, bring those “too good to discard” orphan beads to the March Meeting and we will dress them up in organza bags and recycle them.

* BEAD BAGS: ALSO, DON'T FORGET TO GATHER THOSE PRECIOUS LOOSE BEADS FOR THE ARTS ALLIANCE "BEAD BAG GIVEAWAY" FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL .

Beaded Flip-Flops? Yes, bring a pair or two of flip-flops to the meeting (Hobby Lobby has some colorful ones) plus coordinating beads and we will attach them to the flip-flops with glue and whatever to create a “work of art.” The flip-flops you create will be used at the Bead Society’s Art Alliance Exhibit to create a cute and funky art installation.
