COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS

New Mexico Bead Society Outreach Project
Arts in the Making – A New Day
Youth and Family Services

Arts in the Making is a series of expressive arts outreach workshops created for homeless and at-risk youth that brings them together with professional artists to share their passions for the visual arts, music and movement.

A New Day is an Albuquerque teen shelter that houses up to 16 homeless teens. They are run based on this philosophy: "We refuse to accept the idea that a teenager is unlovable and needs to live on the streets, or that parents are failures. We believe we can make a difference in our community through the programs we offer to nurture our children and educate our families."

BEADING BENEFITS LITERACY PROGRAM

Held Saturday, June 3, 2006 at ReadWest

The New Mexico Bead Society and the New Mexico Bead Trader in Bernalillo teamed up to raise money for ReadWest, the local nonprofit adult literacy agency in Rio Rancho. Thirteen people signed-up to create a beautiful stringed necklace to take home. Many participants expressed an interest in joining the New Mexico Bead Society and ReadWest had three volunteers that sign-up for tutor training. Fun was had by all and we raised $325 toward the purchase of a computer for ReadWest! NMBS gives special thanks to Geri Verble for coordinating this effort. Other NMBS members who instructed were Jan Bond, Susan Fleming, and Francine Long.
